Looking to enjoy the outdoors on your next trip to Padstow? Perhaps spend the afternoon leisurely exploring the countryside? If so, add cycling The Camel Trail to your Cornwall bucket list!
Padstow is one of Cornwall’s quintessential harbor towns.
Located on The Camel Estuary where the river meets the Atlantic Ocean, it offers an enviable landscape with lots of outdoor pursuits.
The fact that there are so many ways to be active makes Padstow an ideal wellness travel destination.
Like Mawgan Porth, its neighbor just down the road, it offers lots in the way of outdoor relaxation. Yet, where it really shines is the fact that there are so many ways to be active in Padstow.
Which for me, is always a main consideration when planning summer wellness adventures.
Padstow is surrounded by lots of sandy beaches which offer plenty of water sports.
The SW Coast Path runs directly through the town, making it perfect for a morning walk or a day hike. As well as, it’s the beginning of one of the most popular cycle trails in England, The Camel Trail.
As someone who champions travel as a way to well-being, I’m always looking for local adventures that support the mind & body. And making time for a ride along the Camel Trail is self-care that definitely fits that bill.
Let’s face it..nature, exercise, and some good food (and wine ) along the way make for an idyllic day out!
While walking and hiking are my main go-to activities, changing it up once in a while is good. Especially when it’s an opportunity to experience the landscape and meet locals.
The Camel Trail
The Camel Trail is an 18-mile cycleway that links Padstow, Wadebridge, Bodmin, and then runs to the foot of The Bodmin Moor.
Running along a disused railway line, it follows The Camel Estuary inland and is largely traffic free. Which makes it a leisurely way to spend the day.
Well, that and the many places to stop along the way for food!
Where to Rent Bicycles in Padstow
You can find bike rental a few minutes walk from the harbor at Padstow Cycle Hire, right next to where the trail begins.
You’ll find all of the essentials. They even have tandem bikes & dog trailers, in case you bring your furry friends.
My experience renting from here was seamless. They were helpful and it was an easy in & out being right next to the trail.
Cycling The Camel Trail
First of all, it goes without saying, bring a camera. You’re going to want to take some photos!
The route runs through both a site of Special Scientific Interest and a Special Area of Conservation. Meaning the trail covers a diverse landscape and there is plenty of wildlife to capture.
To make the most of your experience, here are a few highlights not to miss.
Experiences that will bring you joy and cultivate well-being. So you’ll come back into Padstow feeling rejuvenated and inspired by your adventures.
Things To Do On The Camel Trail
Once you begin pedaling, it doesn’t take long for you to relax and leave any stress behind.
You’ll find yourself smiling, enjoying the breeze on your face, and taking in the nature sounds all around you.
It’s a mindful travel experience, only made better by adding a few of these things along the way!
Enjoy a Coffee Break at The Atlantic Coast Express
Half way between Padstow and Woodbridge sits The Atlantic Coast Express.
This one time livestock wagon now serves up food & drink with superb panoramic views. It’s also a great place to meet other people and chat about their corners of the world.
Sit and Take in the Awe
Benches are meant for relaxation, so don’t miss a golden opportunity to take it all in!
These kind of travel adventures are meant to be savored. Every single moment of them. So sit, breathe the fresh air, and take in the awe-inspiring view.
Check Out The Local Scene at Wadebridge
Five miles up Camel Estuary from Padstow, is the town of Wadebridge.
Since the Camel Trail runs right through the town, it’s a nice place to take a break and explore Cornish life.
Wadebridge is a traditional Cornish town and a delight to experience.
Boasting the highest number of independent shops and boutiques in Cornwall, its an ideal place to shop local & look for some hidden gems.
Enjoy a Drink at The Camel Valley Winery
The Camel Valley Winery is a MUST stop while cycling the Camel Valley Trail.
This family run vineyard produces some delicious varieties.
On a sunny day, it’s great to enjoy a glass outside on the terrace. Overlooking the vines, the view is the stuff that travel dreams are made of.
The Pinot Noir Rose stood up to its award winning reputation. It was a pity that I had to fly back to Italy, instead of driving. The back end of the car might just have been dragging!
Explore Bodmin
Bodmin is a historic town on the edge of the Bodmin Moor.
Hop off your bike and explore the vibrant high street with its shops, galleries, and pubs. Wander and appreciate the imposting granite buildings, before you head back to beautiful Padstow.
Stop and Relax at The Camel Trail Tea Garden
Just down the trail from the Camel Valley Winery, is The Camel Trail Tea Garden.
It’s half way point between Wadebridge and Bodmin makes is an ideal stopping point for an afternoon snack.
Eating somewhere that uses locally sourced sustainable suppliers also makes this place a win in my book.
Any opportunity to support local is always good for people and the planet.
Cycling will bring the The Cornish countryside to life. Your stresses will melt away and be replaced with the freedom the minute you hit the trail.
So be sure to put this on the Padstow bucket list, your mind & body will thank you!
